  1. Use the Dialing Preferences pane to configure all the dialing combinations you might need, so you can call from various locations and connect to any long-distance service.

  3. Options
  4. Dial via pop-up menu: Choose the desired location for dialing output. Choose from the supported devices for dialing. Choose Modem if you're dialing through a modem connected to your modem port. Choose Speaker if you're going to hold the telephone receiver next to your computer's speaker for dialing.

Expert Setup/Choose button: This is a context-sensitive button, based on what you choose for a dialing device in the Dial via pop-up menu. This becomes the Expert Setup button when you choose Speaker or Modem. This dims when you choose DeskTop Dialer. This becomes the Choose button when you select Apple Event Dialer.

  8. Dialing Defaults area:
  9. Create new Calendar Event checkbox: Check this box to cause Now Contact to create a new Calendar Event where you document your phone call. After dialing the phone number, the Event Info window opens automatically.

  11. Omit local area code checkbox: Check this box to omit a phone number's area code when it matches the one you specified as local. Local Area Code field: Type your local area code. This is in effect for all dialing types.

  13. Dial tone pop-up menu: Choose the Dial Tone string necessary to obtain a dial tone at your location.

  15. LD (Long Distance) Prefix pop-up menu: Choose the Dialing Prefix for the call you're making.

  17. LD Suffix (Long Distance) pop-up menu: Choose the Dialing Suffix for the call you're making.

  19. When dialing __ for extensions, replace with __ commas: The text box will set up a match on the exact characters entered and displayed in the database's phone fields. This is in effect for all dialing types.

Define pop-up menu: Choose from Dial Tone, Prefixes, Suffixes. Dial tone defines the dialing string necessary to obtain a dial tone in a particular location. Prefix defines any dialing string that needs to occur after getting a dial tone, and before dialing a Contact's phone number. Suffix defines any dialing string that needs to occur after dialing a Contact's phone number. Normally, suffixes are for dialing calling card numbers.

  23. Name, Value scrolling list: Depending on your selection from the Define pop-up menu, this displays any dial tones, prefixes, or suffixes that you set.

  25. New button: Click to create a new dialing string.

  27. Delete button: Click to delete the selected dialing string.

  29. Edit button: Click to change the selected dial tone, dialing prefix, or dialing suffix string.
